Quality Broodmares Command Strong Prices at Keeneland’s February Mixed Sale

Broodmares with strong pedigrees took center stage at the Keeneland February Mixed Sale, with multiple offerings drawing competitive bids and reinforcing the continued demand for well-bred bloodstock. Leading the session was a 6-year-old mare by Into Mischief, purchased for $375,000 by Eclipse Thoroughbreds, marking one of the highest prices for a broodmare in the event’s recent history.

Consigned by Bluegrass Farm, the mare is in foal to Curlin, further adding to her appeal among top buyers. “She checks all the boxes,” said Eclipse Thoroughbreds’ representative Mark Reynolds. “Her pedigree, her race record, and now the foal she’s carrying make her an exciting addition to our breeding operation.”

Another highlight of the sale was a broodmare by Medaglia d’Oro, secured for $290,000 by Stonestreet Stables. In foal to Gun Runner, the mare is expected to produce a foal with commercial appeal, given the stallion’s ongoing success at stud. This trend of investing in high-quality mares in foal to proven sires continued throughout the sale, with several transactions exceeding expectations.

Among other top sellers was a broodmare by Tapit, purchased for $260,000 by a private breeder looking to expand their stock. The mare’s lineage includes multiple stakes winners, making her a valuable addition to any breeding program. Another exciting acquisition was a proven producer by Uncle Mo, who brought in $245,000 and will be heading to an established Kentucky farm.

Keeneland officials noted that demand for quality broodmares remains strong despite fluctuations in other segments of the market. “Buyers are still showing confidence in mares with proven pedigrees and strong commercial value,” said Sale Director Brian Ellison. “It’s a positive sign for the breeding industry as we move further into the season.”

Total sales for the session exceeded $6.1 million, with the average price per broodmare rising 10% year-over-year. A total of 78 mares changed hands, with many going to established operations and international buyers. Industry insiders anticipate continued strength in the broodmare market as breeders focus on securing top-tier bloodlines for the next generation of champions.

With additional auctions on the horizon, the Keeneland February Mixed Sale has once again set a high standard for quality offerings, reflecting the ongoing enthusiasm for breeding investments. As the breeding season progresses, all eyes will be on the upcoming spring and summer auctions, where demand for elite bloodstock is expected to remain strong.
